A battery looks like one of the simplest purchases in the store. It is small, sealed, standardized, and usually sold by size: AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, CR2032, CR2025, or CR2016. That simplicity is exactly why consumers are easy to mislead. The package may promise “long lasting,” “heavy duty,” “super power,” “high capacity,” or “bulk value,” but the real question is not just whether the battery works on day one. The real questions are how long it works, whether it leaks, whether it damages the device, whether the packaging is legal, whether the battery is counterfeit, and whether it creates a fire, burn, or child-ingestion hazard.
The answer is not the same for every battery category. For ordinary AA and AAA alkaline batteries, name brands and store brands can be closer than consumers expect. For coin lithium batteries, the difference can be life or death. For rechargeable lithium-ion packs, the cheapest “Brand X” option can become the most expensive purchase in the house if it overheats, catches fire, destroys a tool, or voids a warranty.
The short answer: sometimes Brand X is fine, and sometimes it is a trap
For common household alkaline batteries used in remotes, clocks, flashlights, radios, toys, and wireless keyboards, the brand-name premium is not always justified. Consumer Reports found in a flashlight-style test that an Energizer lithium AA ran 7.3 hours, a Duracell alkaline ran 6.8 hours, and a Toys “R” Us battery ran 4 hours, showing a real gap between some products, but not always a simple “expensive equals best” rule. Consumer Reports’ bottom line was that Energizer lithium was the clear winner in that old but useful test, while Duracell alkalines and Costco’s Kirkland Signature alkalines were worth considering.
That is the tame side of the battery market. The dangerous side begins with coin batteries and lithium-ion rechargeable packs.
Button and coin batteries are associated with thousands of emergency department visits every year, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that a swallowed button or coin cell can burn through a child’s throat or esophagus in as little as two hours. CPSC advises immediate medical care, the National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 800-498-8666, or Poison Help at 800-222-1222 if ingestion is suspected.
The brand that now stands apart: Energizer Ultimate Child Shield
The most important consumer development in this category is Energizer’s 2026 launch of Energizer Ultimate Child Shield coin lithium batteries in sizes 2032, 2025, and 2016. Energizer says this line is the world’s only coin lithium battery that prevents esophageal burning if swallowed, and it adds multiple safety features: child-resistant packaging, a bitter coating to discourage ingestion, and Color Alert technology that dyes the mouth blue when the battery contacts saliva.
That does not mean a swallowed battery is “safe.” Energizer itself still tells consumers to seek immediate medical attention in cases of suspected ingestion, and independent news coverage has noted that the company’s technical claims have not been independently verified by every news outlet reviewing the launch. The responsible conclusion is this: Energizer Ultimate Child Shield appears to be the strongest consumer-facing safety innovation now available in 20 mm coin lithium cells, but it is not permission to relax around batteries.
Duracell also deserves direct mention. Duracell introduced a bitter coating on its lithium coin batteries, including CR2032, CR2025, and CR2016, to discourage swallowing. Duracell says its current lithium coin batteries use a non-toxic bitter coating on both sides of the cell. That is a meaningful safety feature, especially compared with uncoated bargain cells, but it is a deterrent, not a medical remedy and not the same as Energizer’s new “no-burn” claim.
Reese’s Law changed the rules, but the marketplace is still full of violators
Reese’s Law was enacted in 2022 after child deaths and injuries linked to button and coin batteries. CPSC’s rule incorporates ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 and requires safer battery compartments, warnings, certification, and child-resistant packaging for button and coin batteries and many products that contain them. Battery compartments must generally require a tool or two independent simultaneous hand movements to open, and packaging must carry warnings.
But federal rules do not magically clean up online marketplaces. CPSC’s 2026 actions show that illegal or dangerous products are still reaching consumers.
CPSC recalled about 94,000 LiCB CR2032 3V lithium coin battery packs sold on Amazon because the batteries were not in child-resistant packaging and did not bear Reese’s Law warning labels. CPSC identified the manufacturer as Guangzhou Lichengbei Battery Technology Co., Ltd., doing business as LiCB, of China.
CPSC also recalled about 312,100 EEMB lithium battery packs sold on Amazon from August 2023 through April 2026 because the lithium coin batteries were in pouches that were not child-resistant as required under Reese’s Law. These included CR2025, CR2032, CR2450, CR2477, CR2016, CR1220, CR1225, CR1616, CR1620, and CR1632 models. CPSC listed the retailer as EEMB USA, doing business as A2batt, Inc., of Redlands, California, and said the batteries were manufactured in China.
CPSC issued a separate recall for about 8,000 VL2020 lithium coin batteries imported by Proudly American Store, of Canada. These were Panasonic-branded batteries sold in clear plastic bags without child-resistant packaging or required Reese’s Law warnings. CPSC specifically noted that Panasonic was not alleged to have engaged in wrongdoing, which points to a larger supply-chain problem: even a recognizable battery name can become risky when packaging, importation, and retail handling bypass federal safety requirements.
The problem is not limited to loose batteries. CPSC warned consumers to stop using Jolnyus Flameless Candle Sets because the lithium coin battery in the remote could be easily accessed by children and the product lacked required Reese’s Law warnings. CPSC said the seller was Jiandeshi Junjun Jiaju Yongpin Youxian Gongsi of China, doing business as Jolnyus, and that the products were sold on Amazon from March 2024 through September 2025.
CPSC also warned consumers to stop using Maryhonkui Glow Sticks Party Pack Toy Sets, sold on Amazon from September 2024 through October 2025. CPSC said the bunny ears, party glasses, finger lights, and light-up foam glow sticks had button cell batteries that could be easily accessed by children. CPSC identified the seller as Huizhoushiaidajinshangmaoyouxiangongsi, doing business as Maryhonkui, of China.
And in April 2026, Autobrush recalled about 48,000 Sonic Pro Kids Toothbrush Boxes because the delivery boxes contained an easily accessible lithium coin battery and lacked required warnings. The product was imported by Lander Enterprises LLC, doing business as Autobrush, of Miami, Florida, and manufactured in China.
The pattern is clear. The issue is not that every overseas battery is bad. Many reputable brands manufacture globally. The issue is traceability, packaging compliance, quality control, and accountability. A battery sold cheaply online may not be cheaper because the company found a miracle manufacturing shortcut. It may be cheaper because the seller skipped the parts consumers cannot see.
The hidden cost of cheap alkaline batteries: leakage, weak runtime, and ruined devices
For AA and AAA alkalines, the most common hidden cost is not fire. It is leakage and poor value. A low-quality alkaline battery can leak corrosive electrolyte into a remote, flashlight, toy, thermostat, or emergency radio. The customer saved a few dollars on batteries and lost a $25 to $200 device.
The cheapest “heavy duty” batteries are often not alkaline at all. Many are zinc-carbon or zinc-chloride cells, older chemistries with lower capacity. They may be acceptable in a wall clock or low-drain remote, but they are a poor choice for flashlights, children’s toys, wireless game controllers, and anything with a motor or light. When packaging says “heavy duty,” that does not mean “better than alkaline.” In many cases, it means the opposite.
This is why the best household rule is simple: buy alkaline or lithium primary cells from a known source for devices you care about, and use rechargeables for devices that eat batteries frequently.
The hidden cost of lithium-ion: fire, counterfeit cells, and fake capacity claims
Lithium-ion batteries are a different animal. They power phones, laptops, cordless tools, electric toothbrushes, doorbells, toys, power banks, scooters, e-bikes, and many household gadgets. UL Standards & Engagement warns that counterfeit rechargeable electronics and batteries can be more likely to enter thermal runaway, an overheating chain reaction that can cause fire or explosion.
UL Research Institutes says counterfeit batteries may lack proper internal protections against overcharging and overheating, and that these products can cause devices to fail or underperform.
The danger is not theoretical. Lumafield’s 2025 Battery Quality Report CT-scanned 1,054 individual 18650 lithium-ion cells from ten brands, including reputable OEM cells, rewrapped cells, and low-cost or counterfeit cells. Lumafield found 33 cells with negative anode overhang, a defect that raises the likelihood of internal shorting and thermal events. All 33 defective cells came from low-cost or counterfeit brands. Within that low-cost/counterfeit segment, the rate was roughly 1 in 13 cells, close to 8 percent.
That finding matters because 18650 cells are common inside power banks, flashlights, tools, e-bikes, scooters, medical accessories, toys, and rechargeable gadgets. Consumers usually never see the cell inside the product. They see the price, the star rating, and the advertised capacity. Fraudulent capacity claims are especially common in the loose-cell world. When a small 18650 cell claims impossible numbers such as 8,000 mAh or 9,900 mAh, that is a red flag, not a bargain.
CPSC has separately warned consumers not to buy or use loose 18650 lithium-ion cells because they are industrial component parts intended for battery packs, not individual consumer use. CPSC said these cells are often separated, rewrapped, and sold as new consumer batteries online.
The advertising war: even the big names fight over battery claims
Consumers should also understand that battery marketing is a battlefield. Duracell sued Energizer in 2025, accusing Energizer of misleading advertising over claims that Energizer MAX batteries last 10 percent longer than Duracell Power Boost. Duracell argued that the claim was based on a limited comparison under one testing standard and wrongly implied broader superiority. The companies have fought over battery-life advertising before.
That lawsuit does not prove which battery is better. It proves something more useful for consumers: battery performance depends on the test, the device, the drain rate, the temperature, and the cutoff voltage. A battery that wins in a grooming-device standard may not win in a flashlight, toy, game controller, emergency radio, or camera flash.
Where name brands matter most
Coin lithium batteries: This is where name brands and safety engineering matter most. For homes with children, grandchildren, daycares, churches, classrooms, or pets, the safest purchase today is not the cheapest CR2032 on Amazon. The stronger choices are Energizer Ultimate Child Shield, Duracell lithium coin cells with bitter coating, or another major brand sold in compliant child-resistant packaging from a reputable retailer. Avoid loose coin cells in plastic bags, no-name pouches, and bulk packs with weak warnings.
Lithium-ion rechargeable packs: Buy OEM or certified replacements. For power tools, e-bikes, scooters, laptops, cameras, and medical devices, avoid knockoff packs. The Power Tool Institute warns that counterfeit and knockoff batteries may not be certified by a recognized lab and may cause poor performance, shorter life, tool or charger damage, voided warranties, fire, explosion, personal injury, or property damage.
Emergency devices: Smoke detectors, flashlights, radios, weather alerts, medical monitors, glucose meters, and key fobs should not be powered by the cheapest mystery batteries. The hidden cost of failure is too high.
High-drain devices: Cameras, game controllers, motorized toys, LED lanterns, and flashlights benefit from better alkalines, lithium primaries, or quality rechargeables. Cheap cells can perform poorly under load even if they test “fine” at low drain.
Where generics can make sense
Store-brand alkaline batteries can be a fair buy when used in low-drain devices and purchased from reputable retailers. Costco Kirkland Signature, Amazon Basics, Walmart Great Value, and other store brands can be reasonable for remotes, clocks, flameless candles without accessible coin cells, and low-value household devices. The consumer should compare price per battery against expected use, not simply package size.
Rechargeable AA and AAA NiMH batteries are often the better long-term value for high-use household devices. Consumer Reports notes that rechargeables can be reused hundreds of times depending on brand and usage, reducing the number of disposable batteries a household buys.
Panasonic’s Eneloop line remains a respected rechargeable option, though Panasonic’s own FAQ notes that older “up to 2,100 cycles” claims were based on earlier IEC test conditions and that newer, more stringent test conditions better reflect real-world use. That kind of caveat is exactly what consumers should want from a reputable brand: not magic claims, but clearer limits.
Disposal is part of the price
The purchase price is not the full cost of a battery. Disposal matters. The EPA says lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in household garbage or regular recycling bins. They should go to separate recycling or household hazardous waste collection points, with terminals taped or batteries placed in separate plastic bags to reduce fire risk.
EPA guidance for used household batteries also tells consumers not to put rechargeable batteries in trash or municipal recycling bins. That includes Ni-Cd, lithium-ion, Ni-MH, Ni-Zn, and lead batteries.
This is another hidden cost of the cheapest products. Cheap batteries create more waste when they die sooner. Cheap lithium-ion packs create greater fire risk when discarded improperly. Cheap coin cells become more dangerous when they are sold in bulk packages that are easy for children to open.
Names consumers should know
Energizer Ultimate Child Shield: The current standout in CR2032, CR2025, and CR2016 coin lithium safety, because of its claimed ingestion-burn prevention, bitter coating, blue Color Alert dye, and child-resistant packaging.
Duracell lithium coin batteries: A major safer-option brand because of its non-toxic bitter coating on CR2032, CR2025, and CR2016 coin cells, now described by Duracell as applied on both sides.

Do not buy batteries by price alone. Buy them by risk.
For remotes, clocks, and low-drain household gadgets, a reputable store-brand alkaline may be fine. For expensive electronics, emergency devices, medical devices, and high-drain equipment, use known brands or quality rechargeables. For power tools, e-bikes, scooters, laptops, and lithium-ion packs, buy OEM or certified replacements from authorized sellers. For coin lithium batteries in a home with children, buy the safest packaging and safest cell design available, not the cheapest card online.
The battery aisle is not just about power anymore. It is about trust. The best battery is not always the one that lasts the longest on a test bench. It is the one that performs honestly, stores safely, resists leakage, arrives in compliant packaging, can be traced to a responsible manufacturer, and does not turn a child’s toy, remote, key fob, or toothbrush box into a hazard.
Cheap power is not always cheap. Sometimes the extra dollar buys runtime. Sometimes it buys packaging. Sometimes it buys quality control. And in the case of coin batteries, sometimes it may buy the minutes that keep an accident from becoming a tragedy.
Not all batteries are created equal.
