Local Rancher Regains Independence with Help from Grand Prosthetics

When Welch, Oklahoma rancher Stephen Bruce lost his right leg below the knee on July 5, 2023, he thought his days of working cattle and baling hay were over. What began as a small diabetic foot sore quickly turned into a medical crisis that led to emergency amputation at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

“I went from working 14-hour days in the hay field to sitting in the house, not able to do anything. Everything I had ever known had been taken away from me.”

Initially referred to a prosthetic facility in Joplin, Missouri, Stephen struggled with poorly fitting devices that left him back in a wheelchair and relying on his wife, Teresa, for nearly everything.

That changed in August 2024, when a friend recommended Grand Prosthetics & Orthotics in Grove. From his first appointment with Andy and Beverly Helms, Stephen felt hope.

“Beverly showed me how to heal my wound, what to eat, and how to walk with better balance,” he says. “Andy built me a leg that didn’t even touch my sore — and he did it fast, because I had my granddaughter’s wedding coming up.”

In October 2024, Stephen proudly walked into the church without a walker or wheelchair — and even danced with his granddaughter at the reception. Today, he’s back in the hay field and cattle pens, recently baling 1,350 round bales.

“Andy and Beverly gave me my life back,” Stephen says. “I tell everyone I meet about Grand Prosthetics. They darn sure know what they’re doing. Good people.”
