Tar Creek Apprenticeship Program (TCAP) Offers Environmental Education

By Miami News-Digest

MIAMI, OK – The Tar Creek Apprenticeship Program (TCAP), a vital environmental education initiative, is set to kick off this June, offering high school and college students from Tribal communities the chance to engage in hands-on restoration projects. Implemented by the Tar Creek Trustee Council Indian Tribes (TCTCIT), TCAP aims to address environmental damage caused by mining activities at the Tar Creek Superfund Site, while reconnecting students to natural resources and cultural practices in the area.

The program spans six weeks, running from June 2 to July 17, with a break during the week of July 1 to observe the July 4th holiday. Students will not only learn restoration concepts but will also gain practical experience by participating in real-world restoration efforts. Through TCAP, participants will develop their own restoration project proposals, cultivating the knowledge and skills needed to become future ecological restoration practitioners and cultural leaders.

TCAP is led by the TCTCIT, which consists of seven Tribes: the Cherokee Nation, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma, the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, the Seneca-Cayuga Nation, and the Wyandotte Nation.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a $3,000 stipend and an Oklahoma lifetime hunting and fishing license, adding tangible benefits to the educational experience. Applications for TCAP will open on January 9, 2025, and will close on March 1, 2025.

For more information, interested students and families can contact Program Coordinator Tami Lowery at 918-541-8305 or via email at tcap.tami@gmail.com.
