Oklahoma National Guardsmen Depart for 60th Presidential Inauguration

Approximately 100 Oklahoma National Guardsmen have departed the state to support the 60th Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. They join nearly 8,000 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from approximately 40 states and territories to augment the D.C. National Guard.

“I consider it an honor to be able to do this,” said Sgt. 1st Class Joseph English, who is supporting his third presidential inauguration. “It’s not every day that somebody gets to go to an inauguration and be a part of what’s going on, not just an attendee or somebody watching.”

Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Mancino, adjutant general for Oklahoma, emphasized the National Guard's crucial role in balancing safety, security, and other duties during the peaceful transition of power: “This is a massive event and we’re very excited to participate. For many years, routinely, the National Guard will provide support to the capital region for the inauguration.”

The National Guard's involvement in presidential inaugurations dates back to April 30, 1789, when members of local militias, the precursors to today’s National Guard, accompanied the U.S. Army and Revolutionary War veterans in escorting George Washington to New York City for his inauguration ceremony.

Oklahoma Guardsmen are scheduled to be on mission for approximately seven to ten days.

In recent months, mainstream media in Oklahoma, including The Oklahoman and KFOR News, have covered the deployment of the National Guard, highlighting the long-standing tradition and the significant role the Guard plays in national events like inaugurations.

Additionally, local news stations, such as News 9, have highlighted how Oklahoma's National Guard has routinely supported such major events, showcasing their preparedness and community impact.
