The City of Miami, Oklahoma, has announced major plans to improve the Miami Seniors’ Center, following its reorganization earlier this year. The center, now under city ownership after the dissolution of the former board, is set to receive facility upgrades, new programs, and expanded services to better serve area seniors.

"We believe the Miami Seniors’ Center is a vitally important resource for residents and a valued community gathering place," said Miami City Manager Tyler Cline. "The entire City of Miami administration, staff, Council and Mayor are dedicated to doing all we can to help revitalize the center."

New Leadership and Facility Improvements

The newly formed Miami Seniors’ Center Board of Directors, which oversees the center's 501(c)(3) funds and operations, includes:

  • Kyla Jones - Chairperson/President
  • Carmen Couch - Vice Chair/Vice President
  • Carol Underhill - Secretary
  • Kathy Wright - Treasurer
  • Eldon Johnston - Member

Updates on the center's financial status and plans were provided by Jennifer Watts and Jill Fitzgibbon from the city’s Finance and Budget team. The city’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Browning presented recommendations for facility improvements, including:

  • A new kitchen space
  • Upgraded water line systems
  • Fresh paint and flooring
  • New appliances and furnishings

The estimated $90,000 in improvements will be funded by grants from Grand Gateway, CENA (Community Expansion of Nutrition Assistance), REAP (Rural Economic Action Plan), and United Way.

Expanded Programs and Membership Drive

The center currently offers a variety of amenities, including:

  • On-site gym
  • Three-table poolroom
  • Library with books, games, and puzzles
  • Outdoor walking track sponsored by Integris Health
  • Meeting rooms and a rentable ballroom

Activities include exercise classes, Tai Chi, card games, Bingo, and community events. Membership fees have been set at $25 per year, giving members access to most programs and events. A membership drive will soon be launched.

"We’re ready to have all the necessary things for the Center in place so we can get to all the fun stuff," said board chair Kyla Jones. "We’re looking at expanding the Center’s use and making it accessible and attractive to our senior community. It’s an exciting time for the Miami Senior Center."
