PRYOR CREEK, Okla. — Local authorities are investigating the use of a counterfeit $100 bill at a Murphy USA gas station near Walmart, according to a statement from Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell. The suspect, captured on surveillance footage, used the fake currency before visiting a nearby Braum’s and returning to their vehicle.

Chief Cantrell noted that the counterfeit bill passed the commonly used counterfeit detection pen test, making it more challenging to identify. However, discrepancies in texture, an incorrect watermark, and a fraudulent blue security ribbon ultimately revealed its inauthenticity. The Pryor Creek Police Department has forwarded this information to the Secret Service for further investigation.
The incident is part of a broader trend of counterfeit currency circulation across Oklahoma. From fake $100 bills in Hennessey to prop-like bills in Drumright and Moore, authorities are emphasizing the need for public vigilance. Genuine $100 bills, as outlined by the U.S. Currency Education Program, include features like a 3-D security ribbon and a color-shifting bell in the inkwell.
Chief Cantrell urges residents and businesses to remain cautious. "If you have any information or receive counterfeit money, please contact the Pryor Creek Police Department at (918) 825-1212," he said.
